Anyway, Shattered is set in the final moments of Render of the Jedi and the weeks subsequently aftermath of the Empire's downfall. Our protagonists are ace A-Wing airplane pilot Lt. Shara Bey and rugged strike strength trooper Sgt. Kes Dameron, both in the Insubordinate Alliance. (These are the parents of the Poe Dameron character in the newest movies.) This insanely attractive - information technology's no wonder they have a love scene early on, a rarity in the 'Star Wars' universe - and capable couple mesh very well with the known established characters, who play supporting roles. The plot is pleasantly action-heavy if non terribly deep, but it fits merely fine with the durable SW canon. More adventures with these two, please.

Ugh, there are Ewoks in this thing - AND Naboo! Look, come back, they're only brief appearances (at least they didn't testify us any Gungans)!Set directly in the terminal scenes of Return of the Jedi, Shattered Empire follows Rebel pilot Shara Bey as the Rebellion continues to fight the all of a sudden leaderless Empire. Who is Shara Bey? Her married man is Kes Dameron. That's right, these are the parents of Poe Dameron, Oscar Isaac's graphic symbol in The Force Awakens. Pretty tenuous link for a "Journeying to The Force Awakens" tie-in merely then such is the nature of cash-grabs!
At that place'due south no real narrative to this i, just a series of bitty stories involving Bey and characters from the original trilogy. She joins Han and Chewie on a mop-up mission on Endor which is ok but I felt it was merely in that location because people dear Han and Chewie and whatever alibi to put them in a comic!
The Empire hatch a dastardly program to create farthermost weather on Naboo in an effort to destroy it. Is it bad that I was rooting for them to succeed? (No more Gungans!!) Leia and Bey go to stop them. Meh. Then to stop, Bey, Luke and Artoo (in yet another superfluous part) become to save a couple of magic Jedi trees - ooo! Yeah, it was pretty lame.
The stories are completely disposable but they underline the basic (and obvious) premise of the new movies, that just considering the Emperor and Darth Vader were killed doesn't hateful that the Empire was defeated. And fifty-fifty though we meet Poe Dameron's parents, that'southward about the merely existent link to The Force Awakens hither and it's not fifty-fifty relevant to the picture show!
While Greg Rucka'south script was incomparably workmanlike and forgettable, Marco Checchetto's artwork was absolutely stunning. All the classic Star Wars designs are rendered beautifully along with the characters and the volume looks absolutely amazing throughout (even if I got awful Phantom Menace flashbacks from the Theed Palace and the Darth Maul vision Leia has at that place).
Also included in this volume is Mark Waid's Princess Leia #1 (the worst of the new Marvel Star Wars titles) and Star Wars #1 from 1977 which is just ok - we all know the story!
Shattered Empire isn't a memorable narrative only information technology's a perfectly satisfactory Star Wars experience for fans thanks to Marco Checchetto's stellar artwork.

Definitely accept to requite full marks for weaving some interesting set pieces into the story (Naboo, the Pathfinders, Han's part, etc). Speaking of Han'south office...

seeing him close with Leia in this book now gets me wondering when they eventually connect. And when, of course, "Ben" comes effectually. Actually looking forrard to seeing how that all shapes up in future graphic novels/novels/film tie-ins.
Worth the read, Star Wars fans... definitely worth the read.

This volume was supposed to span the gap between Return of the Jedi and The Strength Awakens. Information technology picks up right at the battle of Endor and shows what happens immediately after.I was little disappointed. To me this story didn't actually add annihilation. We did get to see some of the characters, merely really it only came across as a typical Star Wars comic tale rather than something that is supposed to be movie canon. It's basically the story of Poe'southward parents, so I approximate it sort of is important to canon, but I dunno, it seems iffy.Poe is a big character in The Strength Awakens, but I'yard not sure how much the story of his parents adds to things other than showing they were veterans of the rebellion. Maybe my expectations were as well high, but this seemed more like a gimmick than something important to the mythos.
All the same, I really did all the same relish it, the art's decent and if you compare it to the boilerplate Star Wars comic, it's cracking. I was just expecting a little more.
...moreApologies for the short review; I'g even so feeling very ill.
This was a pretty solid picayune story set immediately later on Return of the Jedi. It had nice art and the characters from the movies felt correct. I'm probably not the target audience, though, as I don't really care near Poe Dameron's parents, even if he was my favourite character from The Strength Awakens.Apologies for the brusk review; I'g still feeling very ill.

If you lot go by what many fictional stories tell us, when the bad guy is defeated, you mourn your dead and and then you throw a political party. That's not how reality works. Just ask the soldiers and civilians in Transitional islamic state of afghanistan and Iraq and and then many other places where the war never ends, fifty-fifty when it's over.Of course, we don't want our entertainment reflecting that reality. We don't want to sit through Frodo moping around in the burning Shire, or Ender raging confronting that genocide he was tricked into causing. So what if this is the culmination of the heroes journeying co-ordinate to Joseph Campbell. We don't want to see the sad parts.
Render of the Jedi ended with a political party at Ewokville and nosotros were all invited. Yub nub, bitches!
But in Shattered Empire, Rucka reminds us of the harsh truth: the state of war isn't over till the fat ewok sings (which nosotros meet hasn't really happened 30 years later in TFA). And he also reminds the states that the faces at the forepart aren't the but heroes.
Shattered Empire drops u.s. correct outside the Emperor's door as Han'southward team struggles to collapse the shields effectually the Death Star and the pilots badly endeavor to protect the rebel ships from the trap they've flown into. On the ground, we meet Kes Dameron, simply the focus of the series is above, on pilot Shara Bey.
Each consequence features a mission starring one of the Star Wars faces we know, and Bey is swept along or volunteers. She is the quintessential soldier who does her job and does information technology well, and wants to fight the good fight, but she also struggles with her desire to get out it all backside and the subsequent guilt that brings.
The stories themselves are a bit thin, just I'1000 happy to fill up in the blanks of Poe Dameron'due south backstory, specially as information technology complements his story in Star Wars: Before the Enkindling. I read the latter offset and was peculiarly moved by Poe's story considering of how painfully bittersweet it is. We know Poe as the fun, passionate uber pilot, but these stories give him a bit more depth and sadness through his parents' fears that everything they fought and people died for was for nothing. The series started with A New Promise, merely, despite the ewok party, hope might non be enough. With all the wink and fanfare of TFA in the theatre, scratch the surface and yous find a war that hasn't ended, even after 30 years. Is in that location yet hope? Is at that place still a point to hoping? Of course there is. The good guys e'er win, right?
The collected edition also includes Star Wars: Princess Leia #1, where Leia finds herself without a home or a function in the rebellion and the few of her people that remain don't retrieve likewise highly of her ice queen persona. Why doesn't she grieve, they wonder? As if everyone must grieve in the same style. Leia imposes herself on an Alderaanian pilot named Evaan with whom she wants to be friends, though the woman keeps herself at a carefully caustic subservient distance.
When I was younger, information technology never dawned on me that Leia might exist a piffling messed up after watching her entire planet destroyed. She got over it and went on to be awesome, right? Now, I'yard quite happy that books explore her PTSD or plain lack thereof.
And finally, in that location's the 1977 original Marvel retelling of Star Wars: A New Hope where Luke Skywalker looks a lot similar He-Man and stormtroopers are a lot more acrobatic.

...moreThe trade paperback likewise includes the first event of the Princess Leiaminiseries. I volition somewhen learn a copy of the trade paperback and review the series but the first issue was quite weak.
It also includes ane of the issues of Marvel Star Wars from the 70s that retells the first Star Wars film, but I only skimmed information technology over because information technology was non very interesting.
THE STORY: Shattered Empire stars Shara Bey, Poe Dameron'south mother, as she and her husband, Kes Dameron, fight the empire alongside Star Wars icons like Luke, Han, and Leia. In the meantime, Shara worries about Kes, constantly wondering if he will survive as she only gets to see him very rarely. The first consequence focuses on the Battle of Endor and the victory celebration from her point of view, as she fights with the rebel fleet against the 2d Death Star. Kes is down below, fighting to destroy the shield generator alongside Han Solo and Chewbacca.
The next iii issues feature Shara going on missions with Luke and Leia, with a portion most Kes going on a mission with Han. The overall arc is about Shara's conflict between what she sees equally her duty to fight against the empire and the pain of not beingness in that location for her husband and son.
THE BAD: Shattered Empire's brusque length really hurt information technology. There were two elements competing for panels in a mere 4 issues and neither of them really got a chance to shine. Elements for really expert stories were here, only with the first issue already retelling the last moments of Return of the Jedi from the signal of view of a new character, the moments after the last picture show in the original trilogy were rushed and haphazardly thrown together.
We could have had a really touching story about Kes Dameron and Shara Bey, simply it had to compete for panels with the archetype characters from the original trilogy. This likewise could have merely been a fun montage of separate but thematically similar stories featuring archetype characters just the story was instead about Kes and Shara. Nosotros besides could have just gotten another large three team upwardly like what was common in the original EU, but that does not seem to be the direction the new canon is going with their books/comics. Also, the fact still remains that writer Greg Rucka still wanted to tell a story nearly Shara and testify off a montage of post Render of the Jedi battles against the Empire.
Shattered Empire could have been much ameliorate if it went in 1 of two directions: either increase the length, or subtract the number of elements to focus on. If Rucka was still stuck with merely four issues to explore the events immediately following Return of the Jedi, he should have focused more on either the classic characters or the new characters. It would have given the opportunity for more character development for Shara and Kes, or we could take gotten an opportunity more than of Luke/Han/Leia or other classics kicking imperial butt. As is, neither element got enough fourth dimension to stand up out.
I call back the amend solution would take been to just make the series longer. This is a fantastic idea for an ongoing comic series. We ever want to know more about the aftermath of Render of the Jedi. Since the dawn of the expanded universe it has been a compelling era to explore. If the series were longer Rucka would have gotten more time to develop the potentially fascinating story of Shara and Kes, and we would get to see more of their hopeful, heartwarming relationship. They would accept also been able to give us more than of Luke, Han, and Leia, too as other characters like Lando, Ackbar, and R2/3PO. Overall the pacing would have been much better and non feel so rushed.
For what the comic really does have, I was dissapointed overall.
Kes Dameron is forgettable, and comes off every bit a mere prize that Shara fights for. The only matter that sticks out about Kes in this comic is that he is Poe'south dad. The writer showcases him, simply it comes off equally a pointless alibi to show off Han and take abroad precious fourth dimension to develop Shara considering he is non given whatever real graphic symbol development.
Shara Bey is not completely bland, simply she could have been much more interesting. She has a really interesting concept, being a mix of that wife longing for her soldier to come up home as well as the soldier that longs to make it abode to see her family again. Yet, both of these elements, like the balance of the comic, felt rushed.
THE Skillful: I can admire Shattered Empire for the elements that were in that location, fifty-fifty if they weren't fully realized. And even so, there are some practiced things in it.
Shara and Kes have a heartwarming and touching story arc even if it isn't developed enough. I wanted to see the two characters arrive out alive in the cease so they can enjoy the victory over the empire together.
It is also fun to see Shara interact with Leia and Luke, and the missions she goes on with them are very enjoyable. The girl power showcased on Shara's mission with Leia was slap-up and the conversations she has with Luke are both fun and deep. We also got some interesting callbacks to The Phantom Menace, and it was not forced.
The dialogue was also quite skilful. We get outrageously funny meta humor from a line spoken by a rebel soldier during the commemoration on Endor that takes a jab at fan speculation regarding the Ewoks, and Luke'due south dialogue in general was very snappy and entertaining. In that respect, Rucka did an excellent task with Luke'southward character. I too think he did well portraying the characters of Han and Leia from this time menses.
Finally, I can't go without rejoicing in Marco Chechetto'southward return with his fantastic artwork. I loved the artwork in Obi-Wan and Anakin, and it looks smashing here too. The action is first-class and the worlds and characters wait groovy.
THE VERDICT: Shattered Empire has enough good things in it to warrant a solid three star rating. Nonetheless, I think everything was constrained by the mercilessly curt length and a story like this needed to exist a lot longer to be fully realized. Overall, I retrieve this comic is ok. Information technology wasn't bad, simply it wasn't great either. I was glad I read it, simply I don't know if I would pick it up again. As for my recommendation, I don't think Shattered Empire is a must read, but you'll probably exist satisfied if you determine to give it go.

I volition confess that this miniseries should accept been longer considering it was phenomenal betwixt storytelling, the artwork, filling in the missing blank, and providing more questions that hopefully The Force Awakens will respond or for any upcoming post-Render of the Jedi works. Four issues were not enough for me in terms of earth building and activeness but I loved everything about this comic and Disney is smart with how to get our attending and leaving us wanting more when it comes to Star Wars.
When it comes to this review I will desperately try my hardest to make this spoiler free for those who do not want to know anything after Return of the Jedi, and are waiting to read this comic. If your retention isn't what it used to be I highly propose watching or reading what happens in the end of Return of the Jedi because this story literally begins when Luke is fighting against Vader and the Emperor. What I love about this introduction is y'all get to see the mayhem that is happening in space as the Rebel Brotherhood is fighting in the Battle of Endor through the point of view of Han Solo, iconic characters, and new characters that run into instantly.
After the Battle of Endor, everyone is in celebrations, everything is perfect and right in the world and for i of the characters, Lieutenant Shara Bey, a human female starfighter pilot is reunited with her hubby, Sergeant Kes Dameron. You may exist thinking why does that name sound familiar? I knew immediately who it was and people debated nearly it but confirmed early on which is these two characters are the parents of Poe Dameron (Oscar Issacs) who is one of the new characters in The Force Awakens.
I constitute it fascinated that they gave the readers a crumb about a new character's background and I feel like I am ane step ahead of the rest who are trying to figure out what the hell is Force Awakens is virtually. Shara becomes one of the principal characters in this miniseries and you meet how she intertwines with our honey heroes like Leia and Luke and I hope they retrieve her or Poe's father in the new movie. While the celebrations is fun and fantastic, Han Solo discovers that the Imperials have a base on the other side of the moon and they take no clue that the Emperor is expressionless and they demand to infiltrate it asap.
Many have wondered that the Emperor simply dies and everything is unicorn and rainbows only knowing Star Wars I figured it wouldn't be the terminal time nosotros hear of him and sure enough he lives but but the wicked plans that he has left for the Empire to follow. They do not want to the milky way know that the Emperor is dead and if they follow his orders attentively they can withal rule the Milky way and put an end to the Rebel force. That will be the finish of my review considering if I go further so I will be giving spoilers abroad. I highly recommend everyone to read it because it is brusk miniseries with plenty of action.
I have to applaud the writers of this miniseries at showcasing the troubles of war and fighting for the time to come that yous want in the earth or in this case galaxy. Everyone believes by destroying the root of the Empire volition make it crumble to its feet but that is not necessarily the example. For every i step frontward that the Rebels succeed in destroying the Imperials, information technology is always two steps back considering at that place is always a new plan, a new location that sends them fighting in order to relieve planets and lives. Shara mentions it to Luke, " If the cost of our struggle is the lives we fought to protect, the futurity we hoped to see and so what is information technology we were fighting for?" .
Information technology is then truthful and that applies to any type of war if no side is winning so at certain indicate people are going to give upwardly particularly when countless soldiers are dying and resources are getting scarce. I believe that could be a possible reason why the Rebels lost in the end. They won the battle only lost the war and especially for them putting the Imperials into a corner, they are not going to end this without a fight. I would like to know exactly what happens that makes the Rebel Brotherhood crumble.
Star Wars: Princess Leia 2.0Do you think that Marvel came out with a miniseries chosen Princess Leia that was released early on on in the year? Well this comic could exist considered as a sequel to it because we get a scrap of Princess Leia action as she secretly travels to Naboo to seek help by the Queen.
All I am going to say is THEY Need TO Make LEIA A JEDI ALREADY!. The writers keep showcasing that Leia has the force inside her with flashbacks of the past and her mother and I am going basics as to why they haven't explored that side of Leia. I believe it would be astounding for a woman to finally be a Jedi afterward the Jedi order was destroyed. Another bluster that I need to get into is Leia needs to figure out who her birth female parent is and twice nosotros take come close in the comics simply Leia is oblivious and I would love to see her reaction when she figures out who is her real birth parents.
Where's Luke? This will be the last chip of my review and if you have already seen the poster and trailer of The Force Awakens and so clearly you sympathize the question and curious what happened to him for 30 years. This comic does not tell you where Luke disappear but it gives a clear message what is his new task after the events of Endor. Palpatine left a wonder souvenir that no one ever knew about and because of that gift, it provides Luke the necessary means equally to how to brand the Jedi Force stronger and hopefully let expert persevere over evil. I was utterly surprised why Palpatine would have that and it makes me question what was his motive for keeping it and not destroying it into pieces if he is the epitome of Evil?
I believe Luke goes into hiding like Kenobi and Yoda in Force Awakens but I do non believe to escape from the Imperials. I believe he is trying to discover a way to tap into the Jedi Force and spread it across the galaxy and then that way the Jedi Force tin can be summon across the Galaxy. I believe that takes incredible power, resource, and fourth dimension *cough cough thirty years** to make that a possibility. Based on his actions will set the course for the next new trilogy and I hope the characters make references to this comic. A boy can only dream. I am going nuts for the new Star Wars movie and I cannot expect to learn more about the Strength Awakens.

AAAAAAH.This graphic novel was everything I loved about the original trilogy + The Force Awakens. Information technology had all my original favourites: Leia, Luke, Han, Lando, PLUS Poe'south parents, so it was the all-time of both worlds, old and new.

While I feel like we didn't really get to know Kes Dameron in this Volume, Shara Bey was pretty much the primary graphic symbol, and she was amazing at it.
There were several fight scenes, and I admit that I sometimes found them annoying or difficult to read, but cipher tops the teamwork between Leia, Shara and the Queen of Naboo. Queen Soruna was a huge badass and I all of a sudden desire to know more nigh her.
And that ending, human being!! The catastrophe!! The compassion and hope and family unit that we learned to expect and dear in this series! I love it.
